Typhoon Haikui sweeps across Taiwan, weakens to a severe storm

TAITUNG, Taiwan: Typhoon Haikui made landfall on the island and swept overnight across its central mountain ranges on Monday( Sep 4 ), causing Taiwan to awaken to toppled trees, floods, and persistent rainfall.

It had initially appeared to be leaving the island, but on Monday night in southwest Kaohsiung, it made another land before becoming a powerful tropical storm.

There were no reviews of fatalities, but southern Taitung, a hilly county in less populated northeast Taiwan where the wind struck the day before, was devastated.

Chen Hai-feng, 55, a village chief in Taitung’s Donghe town, said,” I’ve lived here for so much and I have never seen such wind storms.” He was working with an early-morning work crew to cut down trees on the road.

Chen claimed Haikui felt more effective despite the fact that it is thought to be less extreme than previous storms.

” It passed directly through us.”
