Water project sparks complaints

A 200 billion ringgit water escape project to supply Tak with water from the Mae Yuam River is the target of a campaign by residents of Chiang Mai and Maech Hong Son.

Native communities whose livelihoods are impacted by the job are gathering signatures and will file a complaint with the Administrative Court, according to local leader Wanchai Srinuan, who spoke yesterday. According to him, the residents will ask the court to revoke the public hearing process and withdraw an environmental impact assessment( EIA ) on the grounds that it was unlawful.

The lawsuit will name the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand( Egat ), the National Environmental Board, the Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning, and the Royal Irrigation Department. To give water safety for the Central Plains valley valley, the project involves pumping water into Tak’s Bhumibol Dam.
