6 in 10 Singaporeans trust that Lawrence Wong is best 4G leader to steer country in post-pandemic era: IPS study

SINGAPORE: Around 6 in 10 Singaporeans trust that Mouthpiece Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is the “best possible 4G leader” to navigate Singapore through the post-pandemic period, according to a study performed by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS).

Including trust in the handling of divisions within society,   coping with other countries plus helping Singapore through the economic recovery.

This was among a number of findings released on Thursday (Jul 14) from IPS’ study on the  well-being of Singaporeans over the past two years from the COVID-19 pandemic. It had been based on responses from more than 2, 000 people in a poll conducted online.

Given that the coronavirus outbreak was a check of governance, coming at a time of leadership transition, researchers said they assessed when respondents trusted the Government’s leadership to create Singapore forward with the pandemic.

Mister Wong, who is furthermore Finance Minister, has been named leader of the Someones Action Party’s  4th generation (4G) group on Apr 14. Regarding two months later, this individual was promoted to Mouthpiece Prime Minister.

According to IPS’ research paper, better-educated respondents, “who typically have been more sceptical about government policies”,   had been more likely to trust that the Authorities has the best possible 4G leader.  

Around fifty nine per cent of those that have at least an university or college degree had greater trust that the Singapore Govt has the best possible 4-G leader, as compared to forty-four per cent to 49 per cent of those without a degree.

CONNECTING WITH THE DEMOGRAPHIC

During a media briefing, associate director associated with IPS Social Lab Mike Hou, one of the authors of the paper, suggested that Mr Wong may have associated with this particular demographic in the role as co-chair of the COVID-19 multi-ministry task force.  

“We believe that it is in particular mainly because DPM Wong has been quite effective within addressing some of the considerations and concerns of the demographic, ” he said.  

This included interpersonal cohesion issues like race and religion, which Dr Hou described as “dormant challenges” that emerged a lot more during the pandemic.  

“This demographic group may be a lot more aligned with our Government’s scientific approach within trying to deal with the particular pandemic, ” Doctor Hou added.  

Those who were more satisfied with the Government’s management from the pandemic, those who were less worried  regarding the rise in the cost of living, as well as those who had been more receptive towards  endemic living had been more likely to trust that the Government has the best  feasible 4G leader, the study found.
