Indonesia quietly engaging key stakeholders in Myanmar crisis: Foreign minister

JAKARTA: As the level of violence in Myanmar rises, Indonesia has been covertly involving important players in the fight, as well as its neighbors India, Thailand, and China, in an effort to kick-start a peace system.

Retno Marsudi previously informed Reuters exclusively that Indonesia, as the head of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ), had started a covert effort to resolve the crisis, with its diplomats holding more than 60″ engagements” with all parties involved.

She claimed that they included the coup, racial minority forces, and a pro-democracy shadow government.

Retno stated afterwards at a news conference that it was crucial to win over everyone involved.

Indonesia is using non-megaphone politics to increase confidence with all parties involved, so they want to speak with us, she said.

” Queet diplomacy does not imply that we did nothing ,” In truth, Indonesia has accomplished a lot over the past four decades.

The Indonesian action represents the first significant attempt to bring all significant players in Myanmar’s fight to the table and push for the adoption of a love” discussion” that its top general agreed to with the union two years ago.

Retno told Reuters,” We tried to be as inclusive as possible.” Indonesia” continues to try to bridge the gap between the stakeholders by playing a bridge factor.”

Requests for comment were never answered by representatives of the Myanmar junta or two armed tribal groups.

The NUG is working with the ASEAN armchair, according to a spokesperson for the organization,” in an effort to promote peace dialogue.”

An official from the Indian foreign ministry confirmed that ASEAN members supported the decision to involve all stakeholders.
