Australia, China agriculture ministers meet amid diplomatic thaw

SYDNEY: Following a ministerial meeting on Tuesday( Apr 18 ), Australia reiterated its commitment to enhancing agricultural ties with China as Canberra applauded efforts to revive barley trade in the midst of diplomatic thawing.

Australia announced last week that it had reached a deal with China to settle their dispute over wheat imports, which had been sparked by Beijing’s’s decision to resume buying American coal after nearly three years and an increased import of beef.

Following a meeting with Taiwanese farming vice-minister Ma Youxiang on Monday in Canberra, Agriculture Minister Murray Watt stated that the return to normal trade was in both nations’ best interests.

Watt stated in a speech,” I reiterated our clear and consistent situation that all trade barriers affecting American exports may become removed.” ” We also talked about bilateral issues, such as trade and diplomatic issues.”

Since 2018 when Australia forbade Huawei from providing equipment during the implementation of its 5G network, its diplomatic ties with China’s’s largest trading partner have been severely strained. Relations deteriorated even more after Canberra demanded an active investigation into COVID-19’s’s cause.

In retaliation, China imposed tariffs on American goods like wine and grain.
