US, UK seek UN human rights debate about China’s Xinjiang

GENEVA: Countries including the United States and the Uk are calling for any debate at the EL Human Rights Council to discuss concerns about China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslims in the far western region of Xinjiang, a document showed plus diplomats said upon Monday (Sep 26).

Several countries had been thinking of action at the continuing council meeting within Geneva following the launch of a much-anticipated UN survey published last month which stipulates that “serious human rights infractions have been committed” in Xinjiang that may total crimes against mankind.

China strenuously denies any abuses and has sent a government delegation to Geneva to counter what it statements are erroneous findings by the UN legal rights office and states it is “ready for the fight” if actions is taken against it.

The particular so-called “draft decision” reviewed by Reuters seeks an argument during the council’s next session that begins in February.

The 47-member council is deeply separated over the latest allegations against China, the “P5” member with a permanent seat at the UN Security Authorities that has deep financial ties with many establishing countries.

The call for a debate is seen as a less confrontational option than a quality which could have sought an investigation into the Xinjiang allegations.
