CHIANG MAI: Part of the historic walls in this northern town has crumbled after the surrounding soil digested rainfall for several days, as weather forecasters issued a storm watch across the country through Tuesday.

A section of the wall structure at Chang Phuak Gate at the moat in Muang area collapsed on Sunday and Therdsak Yenjura, the director of the archaeological conservation workplace, attributed the cause to soil that immersed too much water through rainfall.

The collapsed sector was built in 1957 to replace the earlier external part of the ancient wall that surrounded the central area of the town.

Workers were checking the wall space by all the historic gates to ensure public safety.

Rain has blanketed the northern province over the past few days : and in the several weeks before – and the Meteorological Department anticipated more rain plus thunderstorms in Chiang Mai throughout the 7 days.

The weather agency has issued the storm alert for many parts of the country between Wednesday and Thursday as Super Typhoon Noru is expected to reach the Vietnamese coast during the period.

Its landfall in Vietnam might send rain, gusty winds and some downpours into provinces in the northern, northeastern, main and eastern locations, the Metrological Division warned.

The Disaster Avoidance and Mitigation Department said on Weekend about 52 provinces, most of them in the north and northeastern locations, would be affected by the particular impact of the powerful typhoon that could also cause flash floods and runoff.

Many provinces were already impacted by flooding due to abnormally persistent, heavy rain during this wet period.

The particular typhoon was expected to  arrive on Luzon isle   in the Philippines later on Weekend.
