My prison experience was much tougher than Najib's, says Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) says his experience in prison included years in solitary confinement, and was quite different from what Datuk Seri Najib Razak is going through.

“I was in jail for (years) before being allowed treatment at the Cheras Rehab Hospital (CRH), ” the Opposition innovator said, referring to calls by Najib’s supporters that the former leading minister was eligible for the same treatment whilst in prison as Anwar received.

“I was in solitary confinement for (a complete of) 10 years… and was given treatment at CRH… only right after my shoulder surgery, ” he told a press meeting at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Asia in Bangkok on Thursday (Sept 22).

“My physical ailments were well explained within my incarceration, which is false wirh Najib.

“If he (needs) to be treated and when the doctors uncover he is sick, I might not make it a problem, ” he stated, adding that Najib should serve their time in prison while awaiting medical diagnosis.

“I needed to sleep on a concrete floor, which aggravated my back complications, and was given the bed on doctors’ advice, ” Anwar continued, dismissing states that he received VIP treatment in prison as “utter rubbish”.

“On an individual level, we have been buddies for decades… Najib represented the upper class and aristocrats, and I came from the village.

“I was the Umno Youth chief and he was my deputy.

“I certainly wouldn’t want your pet to endure struggling beyond his penalty but (we) should differentiate personal worries (and) accept the particular rule of regulation and the punishment, ” he said.

Anwar was locked up twice, from 1999 to 2004 with regard to corruption and again from 2015 to 2018 for sodomy. He received a royal pardon afterwards.

Najib is helping a 12-year prison sentence for corruption after the Federal Courtroom upheld his certainty and fine within the SRC International case on Aug twenty three.

Health director-general Tan Sri Doctor Noor Hisham Abdullah had said earlier that only the courtroom can be privy to the facts of Najib’s sickness.
