PM leaves hospital, set for Songkhla

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will chair a cabinet meeting today after being discharged from a hospital where he was treated for a swollen wrist, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said yesterday.

Gen Prayut was discharged from Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok yesterday, where he had been staying since Saturday.

After returning from a trip to Ayutthaya last Friday, Gen Prayut complained about swelling on his right hand. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday for examination on the advice of his personal doctor.

The hospital’s director, Maj Gen Thamrongroj Temudom, said yesterday that Gen Prayut has been moved out of a sterile room as his condition was improving.

He said the PM had asked him to convey a message thanking people for their concern and to tell reporters that he would be discharged soon.

According to Maj Gen Thamrongroj, the PM suffered from a lymph node infection, which caused his right wrist to swell up.

A source said that after being discharged from hospital, Gen Prayut would visit Songkhla as the chief strategist of the United Thai Nation (UTN) Party on Saturday.

The trip to the southern province, which had been planned earlier for Thursday, had to be cancelled due to his condition.

The source said he would visit Songkhla’s Muang district, which has been designated as the southern province’s first constituency by the Election Commission, where Chuea Ratchasi is tipped to be fielded as the party’s candidate in the coming election.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha talks to the media as he leaves Phramongkutklao Hospital yesterday.

Mr Chuea yesterday urged local residents to show up to welcome and extend their best wishes to Gen Prayut after his discharge from hospital.

He said the government is planning several development projects in the southern province, including building a bridge across Songkhla Lake between Muang district and Singha Nakhon district.
