The National Health Commission Office (NHCO) has introduced the food and health programme at Phra Pariyatti Dhamma General Education and learning Schools nationwide after finding almost one-quarter of novices had been overweight.

Prateep Thanakijcharoen, the NHCO secretary-general, said his office launched the project with all the Thai Health Advertising Foundation, Faculty associated with Allied Health Sciences of Chulalongkorn University and six some other organisations to prevent kid obesity among thirty-three, 000 novices. “We want them to realize food nutrition and keep a healthy routine rather than choosing only foods they prefer such as sweets, snacks or deep-fried food, inch he said.

The Thai Health Promotion Foundation’s chief executive officer’s assistant, Prakasit Kayasith, said a survey showed that 22% associated with novices are overweight, compared to 18% associated with boys in the general population. Obesity within novices comes from the preference for high-calorie and high-sugar food items. As monks are not allowed to eat after midday, they tend to imbibe sugary beverages like sweet milk, soft drinks or sweet green tea extract in the afternoon.

The foundation and its partners introduced 4 types of learning to educate novices about balanced diet. They comprise infographics, animated graphics, a collection of 10 books regarding food nutrition and exercise, and a good app to provide a better understanding of food choices.

The training methods will be used in classrooms for thirty-three, 000 novices, starting in December, Mr Prakasit said. With a better understanding of food, the number of overweight novices will fall, said Prof Jongjit Angkatavanich through Chulalongkorn University and the manager of the programme.

The particular app will also make it fun for novices as possible used to record the meals they eat and exactly how much exercise they get to win a reward.
