Subsidy drip pertaining to energy prices to stay
The government will continue to use tax actions to subsidise high energy prices throughout the year to help ease people’s rising living costs, said Financial Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.
Mr Arkhom made the remarks during their opening speech on Wednesday at the Bangkok Post Forum 2022, “Thailand Ready: Shifting onto the Next Chapter”, hosted by the Bangkok Post Group.
The one-day event — where speakers discussed the political, economic and social challenges of post-Covid Thailand — was held at the Planet Ballroom, Centara Fantastic at CentralWorld. One of the 300-strong audience had been foreign ambassadors, diplomats, academics and commanders from both condition and private industries. The forum seemed to be livestreamed.
Mr Arkhom mentioned the government’s income collection in the 2022 fiscal year can be expected to exceed its target but in recent months the government offers spent any extra revenue on reducing domestic oil costs to alleviate people’s difficulty. The cabinet in July approved an extension of the cut within the excise tax upon diesel by 5 baht per litre for another two months, operating from July twenty one until Sept 20. This followed an earlier approval by the cupboard in May of an expansion to the cut till July 20.
The government made the decision in February to slice the tax by 3 baht per litre, down through 5. 99 baht per litre, from Feb 18 in order to May 20.
The financing and energy ministries are considering another taxes measure to manage the cost of energy for the following couple of months. But the procedures will be targeted for your benefit of those people who are susceptible, Mr Arkhom stated. Once the economy will be healthier, these kinds of short-term measures will steadily be reduced and replaced by mid-term measures, he said.
Mister Arkhom expects pumpiing will peak within the third quarter of the year and mentioned he expects the average inflation rate of 6% this year. The Bank of Thailand recently raised its plan rate to acquire persistently high pumpiing.
