Tim Page, refugee abuse, Papua’s plight

This week, the legendary Vietnam war photographer, Bernard Page, passed away from 78 years old through liver cancer. A buddy of Southeast Asia Globe plus foreign correspondents across the region, Page produced his name in the 1960s documenting the Vietnam war from the frontlines. He was much loved for antics for example serving a cannabis-laced chicken soup incapacitating most of the international press corps before Cambodia’s 1993 elections. Yet his photos, delicate to suffering and abrasive in their commitment to the truth, remain their lasting legacy , Globe produces in an obituary showcasing Page’s photography.  

Transporting on that soul, editor Caleb Quinley , exposed allegations of physical abuse against incarcerated migrants and asylum seekers within Bangkok’s Immigration Detention Centre. “They would tie you upward, and sometimes they took disabled people into that space, some people lost their sight, some people dropped their [ability to walk], ” said a single detainee, recalling their experience. “The individual would be normal going inside, and then they would come back as a totally different person. ”

Five many years after the Myanmar military massacred thousands of Rohingya muslims , the refugees have been languishing within Bangladesh refugee camps, where they live in squalid conditions. On the darkish anniversary of the killings, contributor Marte Nilson, argues this instant could serve as the opportunity for the international community and Bangladesh to perform more to protect Rohingya refugees and allow these to participate in society.  

While still living in their ancestral homelands, Local Papuans lack legal rights and an equal tone of voice in their own modern society, contributor Johannes Nugroho reported. Tensions are increasing as Papuan leaders plus researchers warn the threat of bulk violence against Papuans is growing.. “Papua will be Indonesia’s own time bomb, ready to go away from at any moment, ” one researcher mentioned.
