Final appeal hearing begins for ex-PM Najib’s 1MDB-linked conviction

PUTRAJAYA: The hearing meant for former prime minister Najib Razak’s final appeal to overturn his graft conviction kicked off at Malaysia’s Federal Court upon Thursday (Aug 18), but his lead counsel has used on be discharged.  

Mister Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told the five-member bench which he is unable to act with regard to Najib’s case, based on the Edge.  

“My apology is certainly sincere and from your bottom of the heart. I am unable to act for this situation … I was positive that the court might grant discretion within my favour because of the scope and depth from the appeal, ” this individual was quoted as saying.  

He added which he hoped the idol judges would review their particular earlier decision in order to reject the post ponement of the hearing, and if the judges are not inclined to discontinue the case, he would request to be discharged.  

The Federal government Court then was down to decide Mr Teh’s application, Malaysiakini reported.  

The charges towards Najib, who offered as prime minister from 2009 in order to 2018, involved the transfer of RM42 million (US$9. four million) from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Growth Bhd (1MDB) in to his personal checking accounts in 2014 plus 2015.

He was found guilty on three counts of criminal breach of rely on, three counts of money laundering and one rely of abuse associated with power by the High Court in July 2020, and has been sentenced to twelve years in jail and fined RM210 million.  

The conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal upon Dec 8, 2021. Najib later submitted a petition of appeal to the Government Court on April 25 this year.  

The Government Court had set aside nine days — Aug 15 to Aug 19 plus Aug 23 in order to Aug 26 — for his attractiveness. This is Najib’s last bid to overturn the guilty certainty.
