Jail for man who molested 9-year-old daughter of family friends during tuition

SINGAPORE: A 60-year-old man was on Wednesday (Aug 16) sentenced to more than one-and-a-half years in jail for molesting the nine-year-old girl.

The situations in 2016 plus 2019 took place while the girl was getting tuition from the male’s wife in their home.

The culprit cannot be named that could lead to identification from the victim, who is protected by gag order.

He was convicted in April of one rely of outraging the minor’s modesty and something count of trying to do so, after contesting the charges at trial.

The particular prosecution sought the particular sentence imposed, citing the offender’s abuse of trust, invasion of the victim’s entire body and exploitation of the vulnerable victim, and the psychological harm she suffered.

WHAT HAPPENED

The court previously heard that the offender and his wife were close family friends with the victim’s mothers and fathers.

The culprit had known the target since she was about three, and had been especially close to her among her siblings.

He would specifically buy presents for that victim during her birthday and when she did well on her examinations, said the prosecution.

Within 2016, the target and her youthful sister were having tuition in the offender’s home when the target had a breakout of hives on her adjustable rate mortgage.

The culprit offered to help apply powder to the women’s arm so their wife could keep on teaching her youthful sister.

While in the master bedroom, with the door closed, he told the victim to her pants lower and molested her, the prosecution additional.

The criminal prosecution also argued how the man tried to molest the victim in the home between Sep 9 and Sep 13, 2019.

During one of her tuition breaks, the lady was sitting on the edge of the family room sofa when the culprit sat next to the girl.

He tried to put his hand down the back of her pants. When the victim felt his touch, she hidden his hand aside and he stood up and left.

The incidents went unreported until 2019, when the offender requested the victim if her younger cousin had already developed pubic hair.

This greatly concerned the victim, who seem to became afraid that will her sister might also fall prey to the man.

She decided to speak with a friend about this, and finally told a college counsellor about what experienced happened.

The victim did not tell anyone about the 2016 incident earlier because she did not understand what he had done was wrong at the time.

She only realised this when the girl learnt what a “bad touch” was in a Primary 5 sex training class, which resulted in her breaking down at school.

She also testified that the lady did not report the matter to her parents since she was not near to her family members after that, and was in fact closer to the offender at the time.

The victim’s medical document stated that the girl sometimes had flashbacks and nightmares from the incidents, and bad dreams about people she trusts. The lady also had ideas of self-harm.

District Judge Victor Yeo previously ruled that the prosecution proved its case contrary to the man on both fees.

He found the victim’s proof to be unusually persuading, whereas the offender’s denial of the accusations was inconsistent instead of credible.

Just for outraging the modesty of a child, the man could have been jailed for about five years, fined or both. Tried outrage of modesty carries up to fifty percent the maximum jail expression.

The man cannot be caned as he is definitely above 50.
