Overseas travel will be easier soon with relaxed Covid-19 restrictions, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: It will become easier to go for a holiday overseas soon as the government is planning to relax Covid-19 travel restrictions, especially to East Asian countries, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said he chaired the annual National Aviation Consultative Council (NACC) meeting in Putrajaya on Tuesday (Aug 9), which discussed current issues related to the national aviation industry.

“Discussions took place into a wide range of issues towards the preparation of all stakeholders for the further reopening and relaxation of Covid-19 travel restrictions soon among our East Asian neighbours, particularly China.

“Long-term plans towards airport development and improving maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and connectivity facilities to airports to facilitate this were also reviewed,” Dr Wee said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

He added that plans to train human capital to match the expected increase in industry’s labour demands were also evaluated.

The NACC meeting involved officials from various major aviation bodies and regulators including the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Malaysia Aviation Commission (Mavcom) as well as major players in the industry such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and BatikAir and the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia.

The meeting was also joined by representatives from various government bodies including the Finance Ministry; Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry; Human Resources; Ministry Higher Education Ministry and the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office.
