The newborns fighting for survival in Afghanistan

A year into Taliban rule, the number of newborn baby deaths and miscarriages in one province, Badakhshan, have nearly bending, local doctors say.

Foreign funding which usually financed Afghanistan’s general public healthcare was frozen in August this past year. Our correspondent Yogita Limaye has invested time in maternity wards there, witnessing the particular unbearable suffering of girls with no access to pain alleviation, forced to share mattresses, and an acute shortage of physicians.

Amongst all of this, some babies are beating the odds, and enduring, but tragically many are not.
