Head psychiatrist warns of pot use, calls for govt action

Psychiatrists are concerned that simpler access to cannabis is certainly putting people with mental health disorders in greater risk, mentioned Dr Chawanan Charnsil, head of the Psychiatric Association of Thailand yesterday.

Dr Chawanan said there was now a better chance that somebody living with a psychological health disorder might use cannabis which could lead to serious adverse effects. He cited a study by the National Institutes of Health in the US in 2021 that documented the behaviour of 280, 000 people in relation to cannabis make use of.

The study found only 3% of participants who else had no melancholy symptoms and non-frequent use of cannabis had been prone to commit committing suicide, compared with 15% of those who regularly used cannabis.

Dr Afzal Javed, president of the Planet Psychiatric Association (WPA), said psychiatrists agree that excessive usage of cannabis worsens psychological health problems.

Meanwhile, Public Wellness Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the write cannabis bill will be expected to be forwarded to parliament regarding readings this month.

Mr Anutin insists the bill will be a substantial tool in stopping the improper use of cannabis.
