Heavy rains kill 5 in China’s south, authorities issue disaster alerts

Five people were killed and several others were missing over the weekend in China’s southern Guangdong and Guangxi counties as a result of regulators ‘ warnings for severe weather, rock flooding, and geological tragedies in the north of the nation.

The official Xinhua news agency reported that China’s National Meteorological Centre issued numerous warnings for heavy rains on Sunday ( May 18 ) through Monday in parts of Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi, Guangdong, and the northwestern province of Xinjiang.

In some regions of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi, a golden alert was issued, indicating a moderate risk of rock flooding, according to Xinhua.

In China, purple represents the most significant warning, followed by magenta, yellow, and blue, followed by magenta, yellow, and blue.

According to Chinese meteorological data, 2024 was the country’s best year since records began more than 60 years earlier, which is the second consecutive season that goals were broken.

Strong winds and more rain from last year caused spikes in power consumption in the second-largest market of the world.

Heavy rains was also forecast from Monday through Tuesday in regions including the far western region of Xinjiang along the Tianshan Mountains, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
