According to the Department of Special Investigation ( DSI), about 1,200 suspects are being looked into for their involvement in money laundering linked to vote-rigging in the last year’s Senate election.
Pol Maj Woranan Srilam, a spokesman for the DSI, stated on Tuesday that the DSI and the Election Commission (EC ) are jointly conducting the investigation.
According to him, the DSI has been handling claims of money laundering and the activity of an improper secret organization in connection with the poll held in June of last year, adding that operating a system with illicit funds is prohibited by the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
He said that when income is acquired by a company, it is deemed to be connected to money laundering techniques.
Prior to the most recent Senate elections, Pol Maj Woranan stated that the DSI would review the financial audits of assets and money acquired through transactions at the neighborhood, municipal, and national levels.
The official said anyone who backed vote-rigging in the vote will also face charges under Sections 5 and 9 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
” An preliminary investigation by the DSI has discovered that about 1, 200 people are suspected of being involved in relevant financial purchases,” he said.
He continued,” The DSI will summon them so that they can discover their arguments and accept the fees.”
The DSI may phone in the first batch of offenders this month, according to sources at the company.
The EC’s investigation will examine whether offenders may be disqualified, according to Pol Maj Woranan, who stated that the investigation is focusing on Senate election rules violations. Additionally, it may ask for their election right to be revoked by the Supreme Court.
He stated that the DSI will launch criminal prosecution against those who are accused of laundering money and operating an improper secret organization.
Six of the 53 lawmakers reportedly a part of the vote-rigging investigation were served summonses by the EC and the DSI on May 9.
EC officers gave confirmation that the first round had been approved and that DSI soldiers had delivered the suspects ‘ dwellings in Bangkok, according to DSI director-general Pol Maj Yutthana Praedam.
