Myanmar opposition says junta airstrike kills 17 school children

Despite a ceasefire being in place following a devastating earthquake, Myanmar’s shadow government claimed an airstrike by the ruling junta had killed at least 17 students and injured 20 others at a school in an opposition-controlled area on Monday ( May 12 ).

The dark national unity government runs the school in Depayin, in the Sagaing area, approximately 160 kilometers north of Mandalay and not far from the epicenter of the Mar 28 disaster.

According to the data we have so far, 20 students have been killed and 20 have been injured, according to NUG spokesman Nay Phone Latt.

The death toll from weapon injury may have increased, so some people may have been missing.

Since the war used destructive force to thwart protests against its re-emergence as a leader in a 2021 coup, Myanmar has been racked by conflict. The government has been having trouble governing and has lost ground in its struggle to halt an racial minority army’s uprising and a rebel group affiliated with the NUG.

When contacted by Reuters, a dictatorship spokesperson declined to comment.

The coup announced last week that a post-quake ceasefire would be extended until May 31. In response to equivalent actions by anti-junta armed groups, it had first announced the peace in early April, time after the quake, to support relief efforts.

Despite the peace news, military strikes and artillery strikes have continued in some areas of Myanmar. In addition to different anti-junta organizations, the NUG includes former members of the military’s removed from power during the revolution.
