Bangkok: On Thursday ( May 8 ) over alleged ethical breaches relating to treatment received by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra following his return from exile, Thailand’s Medical Council suspended two doctors.
After spending more than a decade abroad, Thaksin, 75, returned to Thailand in August 2023 and received an eight-year jail sentence for corruption and abuse of power upon arrival.
He was not a day in a body, but he was almost immediately moved out of a detention facility to a private area in Bangkok’s Police General Hospital for medical reasons.
Public opinion of a backroom deal and complaints of special care were fueled by his move and the schedule of his return, which occurred as his Pheu Thai party was forming a new state.
The Medical Council of Thailand said its morality council voted to suspend two doctors who were involved in issuing health certificates for the ex-premier, citing disparities between their reports and his real situation.
Following the meeting, the Council’s Vice President, Prasit Watanapa, stated to writers,” It is a result of a sub-par expert work.”
A third doctor who had less” severe outcomes” will be given a notice of warning, according to him.
Without specifying how long the punishments would last, he continued,” It is indeed a very severe punishment for any docs.”
The Minister of Public Health will receive the final approval of the administrative decision.
