81-year-old man jailed for attacking neighbour with metal pole

SINGAPORE: An 81-year-old man who attacked his neighbour with a metal pole, causing an eye injury, was jailed for seven weeks on Friday ( Dec 6 ).

On the first day of the test, Chua Lye had previously disputed the command, but he changed his petition and admitted to one count of deliberately injuring a witness.

The court recently learned that Chua walked out of his apartment on April 8, 2023, while holding a metallic pole.

That day, he saw the sufferer, Chan Boon Hee, and decided to confront his 67-year-old ally over an incident that happened about a week earlier on Apr 1.

In that earlier event, Chua claimed to have overheard Mr. Chan allegedly yelling vulgar things as he passed the younger boy’s apartment.

Holding the steel shaft, Chua approached Mr Chan and demanded an explanation. Mr. Chan denied that Chua or his family were the target of the obscene remarks.

The pole’s end was therefore strongly thrust at Mr. Chan’s proper eye.

Mr. Chan reported to the authorities that his attention had bled and been injured. When the officers arrived, they arrested Chua.

On his right eye, swelling and a slice of about 1.2 cm by 1.2 cm were discovered. The prey was taken to the hospital.

He was diagnosed with injuries to his proper eye, with a sclera break, and received therapy.

After moving on, Mr. Chan received a glass transplant and cataract surgery at the Singapore National Eye Center.

His straight eye, which had generally recovered by Jun 8, 2023, even experienced momentary vision damage.

He was warded for three weeks and had a 21-day hospitalization left.

The attorney argued that Chua may not say he was responding to any “provocation” from the target and asked for eight to nine weeks in jail.

Since the alleged affair in which Chua allegedly heard vulgarities had already occurred about a week ago, Chua was left with this excuse.

The prosecutor noted Chua’s advanced age, adding that there is no proof that he had any condition that may put him in jail more severely than a common offender.

He also said that Chua would be compensating Mr Chan almost S$ 1, 300 ( US$ 970 ) for his medical expenses.

A three-year prison sentence, a fine of up to S$ 5, 000, or both are the penalties for deliberately inflicting pain.
