After an exchange of gunfire near the Myanmar border in the Fang region of this northwestern province on Saturday, men seized 200, 000 meth tablets left by fugitive smugglers.

Around 2.30 am, a military police from the Chaiyanuparb specific task force and a drug-smuggling group collided in Tambon Monpin.

Following a simple gunfight, the crew fled the scene. The troops were uninjured, said Gen Narit Thavornvong, chief of Chiang Mai’s medicine suppression unit.

Pharmaceutical enforcement officials were dispatched to the scene about 6am. They found two modified backpacks, each containing 100, 000 rate medications, abandoned by the fleeing pirates.

According to Gen Narit, officials will increase guards to stop an influx of illegal drugs being smuggled through the frontier in Chiang Mai.
