NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A woman was found dead and two others – a boy and his mother – were still missing after the three went out on a boat across the reservoir of the Mun Bon dam in Khon Buri district on Monday and disappeared.

The incident was subsequently reported to Oraya Luangkrathok, the kamnan of tambon Chorakhehin.

From Ms Oraya’s questioning of witnesses, on Monday morning Athibodi Yoonkhonburi, an 18-year-old Mathayom 4 student of Chorakhehin Sanghawithaya School, his mother Rittiporn Yoonkhonburi, 55, and aunt Kriangkaew Hasungnoen, 62, all from Moo 1 village of tambon Khon Buri Tai, went to the dam to fish with a yor or square dip net.

While they were fishing, the wooden pole of the fishing equipment broke. The three decided to go out on a small boat, about 85 centimetres wide and 2.7 metres long, to cross over to the other side of the reservoir to get a bamboo stem to replace the broken one. After leaving the shore, the three disappeared.

Saeng Yoonkhonburi, 82, the boy’s grandfather, suspected the small boat with the three on board had sunk while in the middle of the reservoir.

Rescuers were deployed on boats for a search on Tuesday morning. They later found the body of Kriangkaew floating near the shore south of the dam.

The two others were still missing.
