WHO says only more land crossings into Gaza can prevent famine

GENEVA: The WHO’s head said on Thursday ( Mar 21 ) that only expanding land crossings into Gaza could stop famine in the densely populated Palestinian enclave.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that children are dying from hunger and disease as well as from a lack of sufficient water and sanitation.

” The future of an entire era is in critical peril”, he said.

Five years of conflict have resulted in severe food shortages for Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians, which in some cases are now higher than hunger levels, according to the UN.

” Current efforts to deliver food by air and sea are welcome, but only the development of land bridges may help large-scale sales to prevent famine,” Tedros said.

” Once more, we ask Israel to start more bridges and expedite the access and delivery of humanitarian aid into and within Gaza.”
