UN rights chief deeply worried about ‘fundamental shift in direction’ in US under Trump

The United Nations rights chief warned that divisive rhetoric is being used to deceive and polarize people on Monday ( Mar 3 ) about a “fundamental shift in direction” by the United States under President Donald Trump.

” Over the past several years, we have benefited republican support from the US in terms of human rights.” In a statement that did not mention Trump by name, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said,” I am now deeply concerned by the underlying shift in direction that is taking place domestically and internationally.

” Policies that intended to stop discrimination are then categorized as discriminatory… Use of divisive language is being used to confuse, polarize, and defy. Many people are frightened and anxious because of this, he continued.

Turk’s most powerful remarks to date about the effects of the novel US government’s plans were made at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, a system that Trump left in February.

Trump has issued a number of executive orders since taking office on January 20 that aim to end programs for diversity, equity, and inclusion across the federal government and the private market. His administration will evaluate whether USAID programs coincide with its” America first” plan while USAID programs are also halted for 90 days.
