Taiwan must invest in building its own 'strengths', vice president-elect says

Taiwan, Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim said on May 6 that it is grateful for continued US security assistance but that it must first invest in establishing its own” strengths” and demonstrate to the world how important it is to Taiwan.

Given her fluent English and close ties to the US capital, Hsiao, who will succeed President-elect Lai Ching-te on May 20, is expected to play a vital role in furthering ties with Taiwan.

The United States is Taiwan’s most significant supporter and arms provider, despite the lack of political relations.

Hsiao expressed gratitude to US President Joe Biden last month in a speech at a think-tank website. He signed legislation to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses as part of a wider deal of assistance for Israel and Ukraine.

She said that” this Bill shows the US’s ongoing commitment to supporting allies and partners in the face of political problems.”

It’s important for Chinese to invest in establishing our own talents initially, she said,” but beyond thanking our foreign friends for their help.”

We must have the assurance that Taiwan is capable of mobilising international assistance through our own efforts to create a tenacious Taiwan.
