South Korea says climate court ruling won’t hurt business

SEOUL: A monument court ruling that found South Korea’s environment goals were “unconstitutional” would certainly change major businesses and it would be easy to update targets that were ruled to be inadequate, a authorities minister said.

In a significant victory for the younger climate activists who brought the case, the Constitutional Court’s decision last month forced the government to strengthen its economic plan starting from 2031.

Seoul’s climate goals were “ruled unconstitutional not because we have a low target”, Choe Nam-ho, vice minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, told AFP on Wednesday ( Sep 4).

The legal complaint was created in the sense that a more explicit goal may be presented, he said.

At the World Climate Industry Expo in Busan, Choe told AFP that all we need to do is talk about what to do in the meantime.” We now have plans up until 2030, and our ultimate goal is 2050,” Choe said.
