South Korea court rejects request to extend Yoon’s detention

The prosecutors ‘ office requested on Friday ( Jan 24 ) to extend Yoon Suk Yeol’s detention because of a criminal investigation into his briefly-declared martial law on December 3, but a South Korean court on Friday ( January 24 ) rejected that request, according to Yonhap news agency.

On Thursday, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials ( CIO ) requested that Yoon be charged with insurrection and abuse of power.

Yoon, who was impeached and removed from power on December 14, has been incarcerated since last week as part of an investigation into his attempt to impose martial rules, a move that shocked the country despite having it overturned by congress within days.

The CIO has stated that Yoon’s confinement will finish on or about January 28 and that they anticipate that the prosecution will request an additional 10 days ‘ delay before formally indicting the president.

However, the prosecution ‘ office’s plea was rejected by the Seoul Central District Court.

The jury and the prosecutor’s office were unavailable for comment.
