Russia expels Japanese diplomat accused of espionage

MOSCOW:   The ussr said on Mon (Sep 26) this had detained a Japanese diplomat located in the eastern city of Vladivostok for carrying away espionage-related work and declared the official person non grata, information agencies reported.

“A Japan diplomat was detained red-handed while getting classified information, in exchange for money, about Russia’s cooperation with one more country in the Asia-Pacific region, ” the FSB security program said in a statement, carried by Russian news agencies.

The diplomat experienced also been soliciting information about “the impact of Western sanctions” in the eastern Primorsky region, the FSB stated, according to news organizations.

Russia’s foreign ministry said inside a statement the diplomat was ordered in order to leave the country within 48 hours.

The FSB stated it had lodged a protest with Tokyo through diplomatic channels and announced the diplomat recognized as consulate general in Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori, persona non grata, the news firms reported.

The particular FSB distributed a brief video it stated showed the diplomat acknowledging that he got violated Russian laws.

Russia views Japan to be a “hostile” country, a designation it shares using EU countries, the usa and allies which includes Britain and Sydney.

Moscow and Tokyo have exchanged tit-for-tat sanctions and expulsions of diplomats since Feb 24 when Vladimir Putin launched what the Kremlin calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Tokyo had complex relations with Moscow prior to the Ukrainian invasion and the two sides possess yet to sign a post-World Battle II peace treaty.

Attempts to do this have been hampered by a long-running dispute over islands controlled by Russia, which phone calls them the Kurils.
