One killed as garment workers clash with police in Bangladesh over pay rise: Police

DHAKA: On November 8, clashes between officers and stone-throwing garment workers who are calling for a higher pay raise resulted in the deaths of one woman employee and the injuries of several others in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government andnbsp announced on Tuesday that the minimum wage would increase by 56.25 percent to 12, 500 taka ( US$ 114 ) a month starting on December 1—the first increase in five years—following one week of deadly pay disputes between workers in the garment industry and police.

Hundreds of workers who protested the novel pay increase and took to the streets in Gazipur’s garment hub, outside the capital city of Dhaka, were reportedly dispersed by police using teargas and rubber bullets.
