Myanmar army’s election plan part of regional talks in Thailand, sources say

Bangkok: According to three sources, Myanmar’s ruling junta’s plan to hold an election amid wraging fighting is expected to be discussed in discussions on Thursday ( Dec 19 ) between its foreign minister and counterparts from neighboring nations.

Thailand is hosting two distinct local discussions on Myanmar this year, the first involving the war-torn government’s neighbours, including China, Bangladesh and India, followed by one spanning members of the Asian regional bloc.

The discussions come as Malaysia takes over the presidency of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations after failing to utilize a peace plan in Myanmar, where escalating issue is also having an impact on its neighbors.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Myanmar has experienced unrest since its army overthrew an elected civilian authorities and resisted pro-democracy protests, triggering a growing, internationally recognized, armed revolt.

The coup is pushing to hold an election in 2025 despite being battered on numerous frontlines, contending with a collapsing economy and lots of social gathering banned, which has been extensively derided as a fake by its detractors.

According to three resources with knowledge of local politics, the issue is expected to be brought up in discussions in Bangkok on Thursday where Myanmar’s army-appointed Foreign Minister Than Swe will attend.
