Biden was afterwards praised in a display of the call by the White House for “his message of peace and continuing humanitarian support for Ukraine, including its energy field.”
According to the White House, Modi and Biden “affirmed their ongoing help for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with international law, on the basis of the UN Charter.”
Zelenskyy has demanded that Russia, which launched an extensive war of Ukraine in February 2022, transfer all of its seized place.
India has certainly directly backed Zelenskyy’s position. India has embraced Russia as a less expensive source of fuel than Moscow, refusing to abide by US sanctions on the city, with which it has historically forged relationships.
India reported that Modi and Biden had even spoken about Bangladesh, where Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi, resigned and fled earlier this month after widespread demonstrations against her increasingly autocratic rule.
According to the American statement, Modi and Biden “emphasized restoring law and order and ensuring the safety and protection of the minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus.”
In the immediate aftermath of Hasina’s drop, strikes on Hindus across Muslim-majority Bangladesh were reported. Since then, the security situation has significantly improved.
Sheikh Hasina had been frequently criticized by the United States for backsliding against politics, but knowing that India was much more invested in Bangladesh, had taken care to avoid coming out in front of New Delhi.
