Indonesia sacks national football coach Shin Tae-yong, citing World Cup target

The head of Indonesia’s sports organization, Shin Tae-yong, criticized the country on Monday ( Jan 6), citing the need for better management as the nation competes to win the 2026 World Cup.

Tens of millions of people in the East Asian island are devoted sports enthusiasts, but Indonesia’s only World Cup appearance took place during Dutch imperial law in 1938, and the nation has often threatened to win back since gaining its independence in 1945.

Erick Thohir, Indonesia’s football association ( PSSI) chief, told a press conference Shin had “accepted the paperwork” and his work with the team had “ended”.

He said Shin’s alternative, whom he declined to name, would occur in Indonesia on Jan 11.

” We need a command that handles methods as agreed with the participants, interacts better, and implements better programs for our nationwide team,” Erick said.

After six of their ten games, Indonesia is next in their World Cup team, one place behind Australia in the race to earn the second automated position in the finals.

If they miss out, they may even take part in a third round of Eastern qualification. Eastern clubs have the option to reserve up to nine playoff spots.
