Indonesia’s communications minister said on Friday ( Jun 14 ) that the country is prepared to shut down social media platform X if it violates a law prohibiting adult content.
Indonesia, the country’s biggest Arab- lot state, has strict rules that ban the sharing online of material deemed outrageous.
Minister Budi Arie Setiadi revealed to Reuters that he had emailed X a notice of caution in connection with this situation.
He continued, citing Indonesia’s digital information and transaction law, which can have a six-year jail term if someone distributes erotic content.” We will definitely locked its services down,” he said.
His remarks in an interview come as the social media platform late updated its guidelines to allow consensually produced adult material.
X, owned by businessman Elon Musk, has not responded to Indonesia’s notice email, Budi said, adding the state would give more characters before deciding on a possible closing.
X, previously known as Twitter, did not immediately respond to a demand by Reuters for comment.
According to data-gathering company Statista, Indonesians use social media extensively and have 24.85 million people there.
