‘Impossible’ for US to give up Indo-Pacific, Taiwan defence minister says

Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo said in response to concerns about US protection commitments to Taiwan that the United States cannot leave the Indo-Pacific because the area is one of its” key national interests.”

At a time when China is putting more military pressure on the political area, the White House fight between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump has raised questions about the country’s safety responsibility.

When asked whether the US is also a trustworthy safety partner for Taiwan, Koo said,” We indeed noticed the fast-changing and tough global situation and deeply know that we can’t just talk about values but no national interests.”

Is it important for the US to ask: Is maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific area, including the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, a key US national attention? Koo questioned.

Because it serves as the country’s primary regional interest,” I believe it is impossible for the United States to withdraw from the Indo-Pacific.”
