China supports Iran in defending security, says foreign minister

BEIJING: China supports Iran in defending its” sovereignty, security and national dignity”, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told Iran’s acting foreign minister in a phone call on Sunday ( Aug 11 ), according to a statement by China’s foreign ministry.

Wang repeated Beijing’s criticism of the July 31 killing of Hamas commander Ali Haniyeh in the telephone call, claiming that the hit had violated Iran’s sovereignty and threatened local stability.

Israel is accused of carrying out the strike that killed Haniyeh, according to Iran and the Palestinian militant class Hamas.

Israel has never denied the shooting, which has raised questions about how the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is going to become a wider Middle East conflict.

Iran has vowed to “harshly chastise” Israel over the death.

Wang told Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, that the shooting of Haniyeh had “directly undermined the Gaza agreement negotiation process and undermined regional peace and stability”, China’s overseas ministry said.

According to Wang,” China stands ready to maintain near connection with Iran” and supports its efforts to uphold its sovereignty, protection, and national dignity in accordance with the law, as well as the law.

Abbas Araqchi was appointed as Iran’s international secretary on Sunday by President Masoud Pezeshkian. From 2013 to 2021, Araqchi served as Iran’s top mediator in radioactive negotiations.
