GENEVA: China has launched a dispute at the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) over tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Chinese goods, the Geneva-based body said on Wednesday.
Trump imposed tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China on Saturday, demanding they stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants in the case of Canada and Mexico. He eventually froze taxes on the two North American nations.
China, which Trump subjected to a tax of 10 per share on merchandise exports, had vowed to issue the action at the WTO.
China’s government claimed in a statement that the WTO referenced that the actions appeared to be incompatible with US responsibilities under the trade body’s founding.
China “reserves the right to increase further allegations and claims regarding the issues raised in this document during consultations and in any subsequent requests for panel creation,” the Taiwanese statement read.
