China arrests woman suspected of ‘defaming’ Olympic table tennis players

Beijing authorities have detained a person who is suspected of making offensive remarks about Chinese players and coaches following the women’s table golf women’s singles final at the Paris Olympics, according to the police.

The suspect, a 29-year-old surnamed He, “maliciously fabricated information and blatantly defamed others, resulting in a negative impact on society,” the Daxing district police said in a statement late on Tuesday ( Aug 6 ).

The event was being investigated, the authorities said, although certain details about the disparaging comments were never disclosed.

In the Aug 3 suit, China’s defending champion Chen Meng defeated partner Sun Yingsha, even earth No 1, 4-2, in a record of their previous experience in Tokyo three years ago.

According to a spread of the event, Sun received loud cheers and shouts directed at Chen whenever she scored.

After the game, some people took to social media to denounce the public’s behavior.

” If this kind of lover society is allowed to seep in athletics, it can eventually undermine even the most accomplished athletes, like Sun Yingsha”, a person on Weibo said.

Weibo, China’s common X-like blogging site, said it had deleted over 12, 000 messages and banned more than 300 records over what it called “illegal” feedback.

After Chinese diver Pan Zhanle broke his own 100-meter free world record, some people also took to social media to show their joy and pride. China was then plunged into the cheating limelight after media reports that two 2022 swimmers had tested positive for a prohibited steroid.
