Supporters of arrested South Korean president Yoon draw parallels between his and Trump’s claims of election fraud

Yoon followers at these presentations told CNA that they hope to pique the interest of the newly elected president-elect and persuade him to help Yoon.

We are dealing with serious election scams, and pro-North informants who want to damage the US-South alliance are a big hazard. I hope Trump will pay attention to South Korea and offer powerful assistance, said Hong Hyeon-young, a student at the university.

Yoon presumably met a close ally of Trump – American Conservative Union president Matthew Schlapp immediately after the North Korean parliament voted on December 14 to remove him from office.

According to reports, they spoke about political developments in South Korea, including prosecution and military rules.

Both places have a long-standing military alliance, with the US arming almost 30, 000 soldiers in South Korea to shield it from the nuclear-armed North.

At liberal rallies, older South Koreans are frequently seen waving American flags alongside the country’s national symbol.

They vividly recall the US aiding them in the 1950s during the Korean War, and they think a strong partnership with Washington is essential to hinder Pyongyang’s challenges.

Hong Kong, mainland Chinese authorities ‘explore how to save students from scams’

Lawmaker Johnny Ng Kit-chong said Chinese students had become “prime goals” for swindlers according to “multiple risks”, including their limited acquaintance with local regulations, prospective language barriers and doubt about their new setting.

Ng claimed that the colleges would assure more students finished the assessment by restricting access to certain school facilities until students had finished the training. He claimed that volunteer programs frequently had reduced participation rates.

” These steps aren’t meant to treat individuals with fear, but rather to provide practical protection against frauds, demonstrating active cooperation between colleges and law protection”, he said.

Lai Tung-kwok, a senator and former security minister, and Lai Tung-kwok, a former security minister, both thought the new HKU measure would be beneficial as reminders for students on the mainland.

He said the steps were “proportional” given the” serious effects” and what were likely to be big financial loss to kids ‘ people.

According to a PolyU spokesman, the university has been working with the police to implement various methods and organize events to raise kids ‘ awareness of scam challenges.

” Since July last year, the school has mandated that all new students complete an online anti-deception education system and evaluation, largely designed by officers, as a necessity for admission”, the spokesman said.

PolyU claimed to have organized 15 WeChat organizations in partnership with police to keep students informed about the most recent developments in fraud-related matters and held seminars to promote anti-deception information.

HKU announced that it had distributed fraud protection products to aid students in identifying potential scams and avoiding financial losses.

The materials included data on four popular types of fraud, as well as video and the multiple-choice questionnaire. The school claimed that the move would aid students, particularly those who are “new to Hong Kong and from the mainland,” in “understanding the important details in person.”

It is anticipated that they will finish the task as soon as possible to raise awareness of anti-fraud, the college said.

In recent years, Mainland Chinese learners in Hong Kong have become more and more likely to fall victim to scams.

On Friday, the Post learned that an 18-year-old island scholar at HKU was cheated out of HK$ 9.2 million ( US$ 1.2 million ) after receiving a call from a fraudster claiming she was involved in a money-laundering event across the border.

Following a situation in which criminals attempted to level the theft of an 18-year-old to extract$ 6 million from his parents, Hong Kong police issued a caution over a growing trend of scams where fraudsters pretend to be inhabitants.

India’s pharmaceutical sector wary of upheavals caused by potential Trump tariffs

During Donald Trump’s presidency, India is prepared for potential disruptions to its pharmaceutical industry, where the British industry accounts for about a third of imports.

Bioplus Life Sciences, a Bangalore-based pharmaceutical firm, is one of the companies that produces generic medications and exports its goods to the United States. &nbsp,

It accounts for a sizable portion of the company’s yearly revenue of almost US$ 1 million. It is a critical component of its business. However, the agency’s president Sundeep Aurora is no discounting that its earnings could be impacted by Trump’s taxes.

“You’re going to have a 10 to 20 per cent value increase, probably into the US. And truly, there’s going to be a restructuring of supply stores around the world”, he said.

According to the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, made-in-India common medications accounted for nearly half of all prescription medications in the US in 2022. In the prior fiscal year, they accounted for about US$ 8.7 billion in biotech exports from India to the US.

Trump, who will take the oath of office on Monday ( Jan 20 ), has pledged to impose reciprocal tariffs in response to India’s high import tariffs on some American goods.

American drug manufacturers are also concerned about Trump’s America First initiative, which could result in a rise in local production and a decline in American export demand.

Chinese fans weigh in as Elon Musk set to join Trump’s new government

Some analysts have argued that he would be beneficial for China, as others have claimed in study videos that are available on social media.

After all, he is likely to be extremely amiable toward China and has invested a lot that, according to a Beijing citizen.

DEEP SEATED US-CHINA ISSUES

There are some early indications that Musk may dissuade lawmakers from agreeing on US” China plan, which is a pressing issue that both parties tend to share.

Democrats most recently criticized Republicans for thwarting a law that would control US assets in China in December, putting pressure on Republicans to protect Musk’s Chinese investments.

According to Assistant Professor Dylan Loh from Nanyang Technological University’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, it will be difficult to suppress hunger for competition with China.

” The problems or issues of US-China are now quite deep-seated and they are structural”, he noted.

No one individual person may enjoy a singularly crucial role. Having said that, there is certainly, I think, a place for him to play a part– maybe I’ll suggest a gate, a cable, or maybe even an intermediary, personal intermediary”.

Loh said that despite this role being realized, China will have a very distinct role in the technology and science industries.

Commentary: Najib Razak’s new bid for house arrest leaves Malaysia in a political funk

CAPITALISING ON UNCERTAINTY

As Malaysia watches this political crisis unfold, did Najib, who when stood at the height of authority, engineer a return that reshapes the region’s political landscape? Or does his request for home arrest turn out to be his most successful campaign on the political stage in Malaysia?

Najib appears to be capitalising on the confusion. Najib is aware that chaotic elections can make for the ideal setting for biblical returns, especially during times of crisis.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Najib carefully orchestrated his common picture, steering discussions on financial issues on social media platforms. He blasted the current government for downplaying the effects of the pandemic and dismissing a potential financial downturn while riding on hatred on the ground.

He was praised for” committed to contributing his day, strength, and thoughts as a team for the sake of the Malaysian Family” during a meeting with then-prime secretary Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Despite his constitutional issues, many still view his career as a period of relative wealth.

While Malaysia’s economic indicators have been improving- improve estimates on Friday ( Jan 17 ) show GDP rose 5.1 per share in 2024 over 2023’s 3.6 per share- stagnant wages, poverty and a lack of high-paying work reflect development considerations.

Although not exclusive to Malaysia, there are numerous instances of officials regaining power in a time of conflict and discord.

The election in November in the United States is yet another illustration of how, despite doubt, people frequently gravitate toward well-known characters who have a stronger past, whether real or imagined.

For Najib, this worldwide tendency toward nostalgia may prove to be a potent tool in his campaign for democratic rebirth, possible allowing for a dramatic comeback to Malaysian politics.
