Beijing says claims of ongoing US-China trade talks ‘groundless’

When asked if Washington was talking to Beijing, Trump claimed that “everything is effective” and that his nation would have a” reasonable deal with China.”

Trump responded,” Every day,” when asked if there is immediate US contact with China on business.

On Thursday, China’s foreign government responded to the allegations, calling the reports of continuous negotiations “false.”

China and the US have not, as far as I am aware, engaged in any sessions or negotiations on the subject of tariffs, let only reached any deal,” said spokesman for the foreign ministry Guo Jiakun at a regular press conference.

Beijing’s denial of ongoing negotiations coincides with comments made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday, when he claimed that the two nations were” not yet” talking about a tariff reduction deal.

At an event held on the heels of the International Monetary Fund ( IMF) and World Bank’s spring meetings in Washington, he said,” I think both sides are waiting to speak to the other.”

The IMF decreased its forecast for global growth this year, citing a more hazy outlook for the economy, where “downside risks dominate.”

Additionally, it significantly lower its prediction for China’s economic growth this year to 4 %, which is substantially below Beijing’s official target of about 5 %.

Experts believe that Beijing may have to rely on other sources of action to achieve its goals as a result of the strong turbulence brought on by US tariffs, which led to record highs for Chinese exports last year.
