South Korean baseball put on hold after fan killed at stadium

SEOUL: &nbsp, Matches across South Korean baseball were cancelled on Tuesday ( Apr 1 ) after a fan died when a piece of metal at a stadium fell off and struck her.

The region’s most popular game was plunged into mourning on Monday when police said that the lady in her 20s had died of brain injury.

The event happened on Saturday during a KBO League game between household group NC Dinos and the LG Sisters at Changwon NC Park in the country’s east.

A piece of metal installed outside the panels of a team company fell from about 18m, mortally injuring the lover and breaking the clavicle of her girlfriend, reports and officials said.

“KBO has designated Apr 1 to Apr 3 as a mourning time”, the Korea Baseball Organization said in a speech.

All activities in the KBO League and Minor League were cancelled on Tuesday, it said. It was not immediately clear whether they would be played at a later date.

Games on Wednesday will be preceded by a minute’s silence, participants may wear black ribbon, and fans may be told no to praise.

” However, KBO and its 10 clubs will perform thorough safety checks on stadium facilities and institutions before game”, the statement said.

North Korean sports clubs in the top two levels have also been ordered to conduct safety checks of their arenas, the K League said.
