Former Philippine president Duterte arrested after ICC warrant over his ‘war on drugs’

MANILA: Philippine police on Tuesday ( Mar 11 ) served an Interpol arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court ( ICC ) for former president Rodrigo Duterte upon his arrival at a Manila airport and the ex-leader is now in custody, the office of the president said.

The Philippines President’s office also said that Duterte was in” good health”.

Duterte had been in Hong Kong and arrived at Manila’s airports on Tuesday morning.

He said on&nbsp, Monday that he was prepared to be arrested if the ICC issued a permit.

Speculation was rife on Sunday that Duterte’s unexpected visit to the city indicated that he may be trying to evade possible imprisonment over his assault on medications while in strength. &nbsp,

The ICC has been investigating the large number of deaths by police and attackers under the former president’s assault against illegal drugs, which left thousands of mostly poor defendants useless.

Duterte’s “war on drugs” was a personal plan after he swept to power in 2016 after crime-busting plan vows to eliminate cocaine traffickers.

Human rights groups claim that Spanish police and vigilantes under their direction murdered armed medicine suspects on a large scale on Duterte’s view, allegations that authorities have denied.

While Duterte immediately withdrew the Philippines from the ICC, the state under new head Ferdinand Marcos has indicated Duterte may be handed over.
