Indonesia joins BRICS bloc as full member, Brazil says

SAO PAULO: Brazil’s government announced in a statement on Monday ( Jan 6 ) that Indonesia is officially a full member of the BRICS, further extending the group of important emerging economies that includes Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Indonesia, the fourth-largest country in the world, had recently indicated that it wanted to join the party to aid in developing nations and advance the interests of the so-called Global South.

Brazil, which holds the bloc’s president in 2025, said the member states approved Indonesia’s entrance by compromise as part of an expansion drive originally approved at the bloc’s 2023 summit in Johannesburg.

The South American country pointed out that Indonesia’s charge was approved by the alliance in 2023, but the Asian region requested membership after the nation won the presidency next year. President Prabowo Subianto&nbsp, took company in October.

Indonesian authorities stated that the country” shares the group’s assistance for the transformation of global governance institutions” and that it makes a positive contribution to the expansion of cooperation in the Global South.

The BRICS team also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
