WASHINGTON: South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul said on Monday ( Nov 18 ) he is” strongly confident” the South Korea-US alliance will continue to thrive under the incoming US administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
In recorded notes to a conference held by Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies, Cho stated that” confusions have been raised in some circles about the relevance of the election results on US relationships with its friends.”
However, he said,” I’m very confident that the Korea-US alliance will continue to prosper and grow in the upcoming times.”
As the new Trump administration prepares to shake off relationships around the world, former US President Joe Biden met with leaders from Japan and South Korea on Friday.
Getting South Korea and Japan to work up is considered one of the political efforts of Biden’s soon-to-end four-year term as president.
Trump’s first term put more pressure on Seoul and Tokyo to pay for the US forces they house, which include maritime warships and marine units that Washington could use to protect Taiwan’s neighbor from any Chinese attack.
