Malaysia says no to hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games over cost

Malaysia made the decision to not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday ( Mar 22 ), in a recent blow to a tradition that some consider to be outdated.

Following the state of Victoria’s exit next year, the decision was made at a government appointment led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Minister Hannah Yeoh stated in a speech that the government decided to decline to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

After Victoria withdrew next July because of rising prices, the CGF is trying to find a sponsor.

The CGF offered Malaysia and other potential guests £100 million ( US$ 125 million ) to remove Victoria.

However, Yeoh claimed the Malaysian government was” never expected to be able to cover the entire charge of organizing a large-scale sports occasion.”

The federal wants to prioritize both the security and well-being of the people as well as the development of sports.

Victoria’s rapid walk, and the lack of an evident solution, triggered discussion about the future of the Games, which take place every four times and were last held in Birmingham in 2022.

The CGF has suggested that Malaysia was not the only nation that it had approached to host the Games.

Singapore just said it was “assessing the viability” of the CGF’s request.
