NEW DELHI: India announced on Sunday, October 22, that its connection with Canada is going through a trying phase and that American officials have” continued interference” in New Delhi’s domestic affairs.
The French Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested last month that American agents may have been involved in the June execution of a Sikh separatist innovator in British Columbia, which infuriated the American government. India refutes the claim.
” The connection is currently going through a challenging period. However, I do want to point out that some aspects of American politics and the policies that result from them are the source of our issues, according to S Jaishankar, India’s international minister.
On Thursday, New Delhi decided to unilaterally revoke Canada’s formal diplomatic standing, forcing it to remove 41 of its ambassadors from India.
Millions of people in both countries are having a hard time going about their daily lives, according to Trudeau, who claimed on Friday that the American government is cracking down on American ambassadors.
According to Jaishankar, India used diplomatic equality under the Vienna Convention” out of concern for Canadian personnel’s ongoing meddling in our politics.”
” We haven’t given it much public attention.” In a film clip posted by the news organization ANI, Jaishankar said,” My feeling is that over time more things may come out and people will understand why we had the kind of pain with many of them which we did.”
Last year, Melanie Joly, the foreign minister of Canada, claimed that India’s position was ridiculous, extraordinary, and flagrantly in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Jaishankare added that India stopped issuing visas to Canada a few weeks ago because it was worried about the security and safety of its officials while they were at work. If there was improvement in the security of its diplomats stationed there, he said, India would resume issuing visa.
Five percent of Canadians, or about two million, are of American descent. India, which accounts for roughly 40 % of investigation permit holders, is by far Canada’s largest source of international students.
