Southern Korean President Yoon to meet US, Japan leaders in Spain throughout NATO summit

SEOUL: South Korean Leader Yoon Suk-yeol can meet leaders of the United States and Japan on Wednesday (Jun 29) during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in This town, an official at the usa president office said on Sunday.

The trilateral conference will be the first such gathering since September 2017.

President Yoon and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida are not likely to hold a separate conference, the official added.

Separately, a Japan government official furthermore told Reuters which the three leaders will hold a meeting on Jun 29.

Previously this week, South Korea said it planned to set up a delegation to NATO within Brussels as Seoul pushes to improve its partnership with all the organisation and enjoy a bigger role on the global stage.

Yoon, who was sworn in on May 10, will be the first South Korean leader to attend a NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION summit, as the nation, along with Japan, Sydney and New Zealand, has been invited since the organisation’s Asia-Pacific partners.

While the Jun 29-30 meeting in Madrid is anticipated to focus on the Ukraine crisis, Yoon plans to drum upward international cooperation towards North Korea’s nuclear programme, the presidential office said.
