SEOUL: South Korea levied millions of dollars in fines on Alphabet’s Google and Meta Platforms for personal privacy law violations, authorities said on Wednesday (Sep 14), as Meta considers battling the decision in court.
Inside a statement, the Personal Information Protection Commission mentioned it fined Search engines 69. 2 billion won (US$50 million) and Meta thirty. 8 billion received (US$22 million).
Google did not come with an immediate comment.
A Meta spokesperson said, “While we all respect the commission’s decision, we are self-confident that we work with our own clients in a legally compliant way that will meets the processes required by nearby regulations. As such, we do not agree with the particular commission’s decision, and will also be open to all options including seeking a ruling from the court. ”
The particular privacy panel stated the firms did not clearly inform services users and obtain prior consent when collecting and analysing behavioural information to infer their interests or even use them for customised advertisements.
