Senior cop could face assault rap

A man who claimed to be a gambling website administrator yesterday asked deputy national police chief Surachate Hakparn to investigate a senior police officer over an alleged assault on him.

The complainant, who was accompanied by Ekkaphop Luangprasert, founder of the Sai Mai Tong Rod Facebook page, said he was attacked by two men last month in Chon Buri.

He said he believed it was an order from the owner of the gambling website, who was upset about a drop in income.

According to the complainant, the website in question is owned by a police major-general who was a classmate of Pol Gen Surachate at the Police Academy.

He said the owner had several websites with more than 100 million baht in circulation, and one of them, which he supervised, saw its income drop.

He said he was taken by the owner’s men to a cafe in Chon Buri, where he was assaulted and forced to admit the decline was his fault.

The complainant said he worked on the website for more than two years, adding he was allowed to leave the cafe after the owner’s men had servers checked and found no irregularities.

Pol Gen Surachate yesterday promised to look into the allegations, saying action will be taken if police officers are involved in gambling sites.

He said investigators would summon the police officer in question to acknowledge the charge if there are grounds to the allegations. Police may also seek an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, he said.

The deputy police chief said there are ways to find connections between the accused police officer and the gambling site, even if the site was shut down.

If any wrongdoing was found, he said he would order the police officer’s supervisor to launch a fact-finding inquiry and take disciplinary action.
